It has been three months — or is it more? Anyway, I finally got my butt in gear and started a new large format painting. The painting is 30 inches X 48 inches (76.2 cm X 121.92 cm).
So what is my subject you may ask? Well, I have been working towards that for the past month of October. If you check out my “scribbles” section you will see I have been creating numerous “mindless and thoughtless” sketches and scribbles. These drawings are the studies for this new painting.
Below are the steps I have taken so far.
Step 1: create a basic background field of colour using blue, sienna, umber and a little red for warmth.
Step 2: I want to replicate the mindless approach used in my recent drawings so I start drawing directly on the canvas. I use black Sharpies. Once I establish the basic composition (trying not to think about it of course) I begin rendering the individual shapes. This is where the thinking creeps in.
I think lighting, form, contrast , etc.. I do however try not to think too hard. If I should get some weirdness due to incorrectness then that’s great. Anything really weird I can fix when I start to apply paint and colour.
My next step is to finish rendering the drawing and then start painting. That’s when mindlessness is out the window and the struggle begins.
